“Hi Sean! My name is Timothy from the YPP East Africa cohort. First, I want to thank you for the super exciting training and the insight you guys gave us. Live forever! I am currently watching the TV series Startup and got to this interesting episode. The story is about an underdog team (a tech startup) competing with a market-leading company for sales. In this particular episode, one of these tech events where everyone in the tech world is in attendance is being held. Both competitors are there. The first day, the underdogs send a guy who goes around talking to prospective clients but doesn't bag any of them. The next day, the guy funding the underdogs goes in and closes deals with almost everyone he meets. Why? The former kept talking about the product - and he found everyone wanted to partner with the competitor. The latter goes in and keeps talking about the customer. He rarely mentions the product. He keeps on saying "you". I know this is too much info, but I just found it interesting how this information is relating with what you guys taught us. This is the second time I have watched this scene. The first time I watched it (pre-YPP), I thought this guy won because he was bold and looked like a people person. But watching it after your class, I realised he won because his focus was on the customer 100%. I didn't know such subtle strategies could move mountains, but now I do, because of you! I cannot wait to apply the skills learnt. Thank you!”
